As we sat there, Steve used "cause célèbre" in a sentence correctly, including the pronunciation, and I put my head down for a second and stared hard at the table because I was pretty sure I was done for.
I knew that Steve played guitar, but lots of people “play guitar,” and in my experience, um, no, they don’t. On our fourth date, we met for dinner, took a walk and ended up in a music store. Steve asked the owner if he could try out one of the acoustic guitars hanging on the wall. The owner handed him a guitar and Steve sat down on a stool and proceeded to play a note-perfect version of “Blackbird.” My very first thought was, “Oh. OH! OK. I’m done.” I had an overwhelming sense of recognition, peace and joy. Steve was the guy who made me realize, late in my 40s, that I really needed just two things and everything else was gravy: I needed someone smart who a) made me think and b) made me laugh. Steve did both, in spades. And the guitar-playing and his gorgeous face were lovely bonuses!
Nicole’s story was lovely. Am same age bracket, did the same in finding love with a very similar vein…. Yet sadly it exploded. I burned the haystack and got burned. Yet to be fair, hard to see until the mask drops.
